Dr. Sirpi Balasubramaniam fondly called by his pen name Sirpi is a major Tamil Poet, an excellent translator, acclaimed educationist and an editor of literary journals.
Athupollachi, a remote village in Pollachi Taluk, Coimbatore District is his birth place. He had his early school education in Kerala. After his early college education in Jamal Mohamed College, Thiruchirapalli, he joined the B.A (Hons) course in Tamil Language and literature at Annamalai university in 1953.
He started his career as lecturer in Tamil in NGM College, Pollachi in 1958 and later became the Head of the Tamil Department. In 1989 he was selected for the post of professor and Head of the Tamil Department, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore and served the institution with distinction until 1997. He took up the Convership Tamil Advisory Board and membership of the Executive Board, Sahitya Akademi in 2007 and had a brilliant career upto 2012.
He had won Sahitya Akademi awards twice, one for his creative work and anther for his translation (2001, 2003). He has been decorated with many other awards including Pavendar Award, Kalimamani Awad of Tamilndau Govt., Rajah Sir Muthaiah Award, Mahakavi Ulloor Award (Trivandrum Tamil Sangam), Kannadasan Award.
At present he is the Director of Arutchelvar Dr. N. Mahalingam Translation Institute, Pollachi.
